Double Down lowers standards by leaps and bounds

Two slices of Monterey Jack cheese, two slices of Pepper Jack cheese, two strips of bacon and a little bit of Colonel Sauce all between two 100 percent all white meat chicken fillets (with no pesky bread to get in the way).

This sandwich is no myth: it’s very real.

As of Monday, April 12, KFC’s nationwide have unleashed the newest member of their family: The Double Down.  Or as I like to think of it, the Double Downer.

This “sandwich” made quite the name for itself when it was first tested last summer in Rhode Island and Nebraska.  According to KFC’s website, the demand for the sandwich was so great it made people nationwide hop in their cars to taste the meaty explosion.

The sandwich is offered in different styles: Original Recipe or Grilled (for the weight conscious).  The Original Recipe sandwich weighs in with 540 calories, 32 grams of fat and 1380 milligrams of sodium.

The Grilled version on the other hand has 460 calories, 23 grams of fat and 1430 milligrams of sodium.

According to the Center for Disease Control, two out of three Americans should be limiting their intake to 1,500mg of sodium per day.  Too much salt in someone’s diet can lead to high blood pressure and possibly heart disease and stroke which are the number one and three killers of men and women in the nation today.

Yes, there are worse things in fast food today, but that doesn’t mean the Double Down is ok.

Being a vegetarian, of course I do not appreciate this sandwich, but even meat-eaters have said it’s too unhealthy for them.  YouTube has nearly 300 videos of people eating the sandwich, discussing it or throwing it away.

One man said KFC’s next step is the “all in bucket” where the bucket is made out of chicken and it comes with a Lay-Z-Boy chair that reclines into a hospital bed.

Many of the videos have people trying to figure out how to hold the sandwich without getting their hands covered in grease.

But overall, whether this sandwich still sounds like the best thing to hit fast food or a heart attack wrapped in foil, KFC is trying to do some good with it.

All the unused white buns that usually go on sandwiches will now be donated to food banks all over America.  Because that’s what food banks need…cheap, white sandwich buns.

To me, this sandwich still seems like a joke.  Portion sizes are a joke now and this Double Down has doubled down the standards for food.
