The Western Michigan University track and field team completed Day One of the Alex Wilson Invitational on Friday evening, beating another school record as the distance medley relay team crushed its previous score by 10 seconds.

Bronco freshman Cara Cremeans started off the first leg with a 3:30 split. Junior sprinter Victoria Chatman took it from there, running a 53.9 second 400-meter split, handing the baton off to Rachel Whitley.

Whitley ran the 800-meter with a split time of 2:15. Jennifer Robert then took over for the mile anchor leg, running a time of 4:53 to help shatter the previous record with a combined time of 11:33.40.

Senior thrower Irene Cooper took another first place in the weight throw with a distance of 65 feet, 7 inches.

Junior Ashley Hunault also competed in the long jump on Friday. After winning a Mid-American Conference title for the long jump last weekend, Hunault took third place with a distance of 19 feet, 4.75 inches.

The Brown and Gold continue competition at the invitational Saturday with Roberts running in the 3,000-meter run at 11 a.m. and the 4×400-meter relay team of Hunault, Chatman, Leya Munwam and Iris Campbell will compete later in the day as well.
