Coaching changes, recruits and defense were the main highlights when Western Michigan head football coach Bill Cubit did a live chat via the Detroit Free Press with the Bronco nation on Monday, Feb. 13.
Among the many topics discussed was the recruiting class that brought 27 players, 12 of which were from the state of Florida. The Broncos are losing this year, their top three wide receivers, but not to be worried, Cubit got six wide receivers in the recruiting class.
“We went out and recruited guys that we felt could play for us and help the team,” Cubit said. “We’re hoping they can step in and step up if needed.”
The offense seems to be in great hands with senior quarterback Alex Carder leading the way. Carder, who threw for 3,873 yards and 31 touchdowns last season, is seemingly going to have to have another big year for the Broncos to be successful.
“Our offense starts with Carder,” Cubit said.
With Carder at the helm of the Broncos offense, the possibility of him going into next year’s NFL draft is something not out of the question, according to Cubit.
“You never know,” Cubit said. “If he has a great senior season and takes care of the football, I feel he has the potential to play in the NFL.”
Not only was the offense stressed during the live chat, but the defense was a hot topic as well. The replacement of MAC defensive player of the year Drew Nowak is no easy task, but can be managed.
“Defensive Tackle Demetrius Anderson will be a great player for us,” Cubit said. “We are excited about recruit Cleveland Smith heading into the spring as well.”
As spring ball approaches, WMU has some coaching positions to fill as well. The Broncos are looking to fill positions at both defensive coordinator and linebacking coach. Both which should be filled by the end of the week, according to Cubit.
“We are in the final processes regarding the DC position,” Cubit said. “I can say however, that we will be staying in house.”
Finally, the Broncos last year had narrow losses to Illinois, Purdue and eventual Sugar Bowl Champion, University of Michigan. They ended the year in the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl, just coming up short of winning the programs first bowl game. As for the expectations this year, Cubit keeps the same motto.
“Win the MAC Championship, go to and win our bowl game,” Cubit said.
Now that the mess of national signing day is gone and past, the Broncos can focus on the upcoming season which has tough road tests against Illinois, Minnesota and Central Michigan. Spring practice for WMU starts on March 16.
