RUSTON, La - The Western Michigan volleyball team swept matches at the Louisiana Tech Fairfield Inn Volleyball Invitational at the Thomas Assembly Center in Ruston, Louisiana.
Friday WMU (5-1) opened with a dominating victory over New Orleans 3-0 followed by an impressive victory over the hosting Louisiana Tech 3-1.
Saturday morning the Lady Broncos completed the sweep of the weekend with another dominating victory over McNeese State 3-0.
First Match: WMU 3, UNO 0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-15)
The Lady Broncos were led by a prolific offensive performance from sophomore Stephenee Yancy. Yancy recorded 16 kills with a .542 hitting percentage. Junior Lexie Pawlik recorded a double-double tallying 33 assist and 11 digs.
Late in the first set senior Lena Oliver became only the second player in WMU program history to record 2000 career digs joining Caitlin Strimel who is the program’s all-time leader in digs.
However, Oliver only recorded nine digs and sophomore Carline Rose tallied 10 digs as the Lady Broncos frontline dominated registering 8.0 team blocks.
Second Match: WMU 3, La Tech 1 (25-7, 24-26, 25-10, 25-20)
WMU relied on stellar defense to oust La Tech in four sets, holding them to a .098 hitting percentage while the Lady Broncos hit .283 as a team.
Senior Rachel Sheffer and freshman Alysia Baznik recorded team-highs with 12 kills apiece.
Pawlik was a jack of all trades recording 45 assist, eight kills, eight digs, and three blocks. Lena Oliver contributed a match-high 18 digs.
Third Match: WMU 3, MSU 0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-23)
In the invitational’s finale WMU displayed another impressive performance as they hit .314 as a team.
Yancy recorded a team high 15 kills, Baznik tallied a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Lena Oliver also tallied 11 digs.
Sheffer recorded nine kills while Pawlik assisted 39 times.
Improving to 5-1 over the course of the weekend, the Lady Broncos return to University Arena as they face IPFW Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
