WMU’s Lewis records three hits and two RBIs

Chris Lewis is used to making pitcher’s outings in the Mid-American Conference a nightmare.

Now he’s doing that at a whole other level.

Lewis recorded three hits and two RBIs in the Battle Creek Bombers’ 7-3 win over the Thunder Bay Border Cats Sunday.

The Bombers are members of the Northwoods League, a summer baseball league where all players must have NCAA eligibility to participate.

The Northwoods League’s rules are similar to minor league baseball rules and the players use wooden bats. However, the players are not paid to keep their NCAA eligibility.

Western Michigan University pitcher Tim Mowry is also a member of the Bombers.

Pitcher Joe Wagstaff, of Louisburg College (N.C.), picked up his first win of the season, pitching 5 and 1/3 innings.

Wagstaff gave up three runs, none earned, on five hits with four strikeouts and walking only four.

Parker Berberet and Chas Anthony contributed with two hits each.

Berberet is from Cyprus College in Cyprus, Calif. and Anthony is from Erskine College in Due West, S.C.

Lewis leads Battle Creek with a .538 batting average four games into the 2009 season.

Mowry has given up no runs and no hits and striking out five in 2.1 innings in one appearance this season.

The Bombers now go on a four-game road trip facing the Waterloo Bucks and the LaCrosse Loggers.
