Arenas avoids jail time after gun scare

Gilbert Arenas dodged a major bullet Friday when a Washington D.C. judge sentenced him to only 30 days in a halfway house and 400 hours of community service.
It was widely assumed that Arenas would have to do three to six months of jail time for bringing four (unloaded) guns into the Washington Wizard’s locker room last December.
Arenas brought the guns into the locker room after a conflict with, then teammate, Javaris Crittenton. The two got into an altercation, eventually leading to Arenas placing four unloaded guns in a locker with a sign that read “pick one.”
After word got out of his gun display, Arenas then tried to get Crittenton and others to lie to the authorities on what really happened. Having an unlicensed gun in D.C. is a crime. Having one, let alone four, in any kind of NBA office or arena is against the rules as well.
As a National Basketball Association veteran, Gilbert had to have known that.
It is obvious he broke the law and his actions following the incident were also questionable. With that said, Arenas already agreed to serve a 50 game suspension. He has also lost upwards of seven million in salary and endorsements.
How much harm could four unloaded guns do? Jail is for criminals; dangerous people who pose a threat to society.
This is Gilbert Arenas. The NBA’s biggest goofball.
Arenas has always been a fan favorite in Washington. As much as he is known for his great play on the court, he is known just as well for his ridiculous comments. Arenas isn’t known for tact or intelligence, hence the reason this incident, or his actions afterward, shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who knows anything about him.
Arenas might be ignorant but he isn’t dangerous. Although this “joke” might have been in bad taste, it was not meant to harm anyone. Losing millions of dollars and not being able to play the game you love is enough punishment. Coming this close to jail should be enough to teach anyone a lesson.
Hopefully, Agent Zero has learned his.
