Before the tailgating and football game Saturday over 1,500 runners and walkers exercised instead of partied and braved cold and wet conditions for Western Michigan University’s homecoming Campus Classic 5k run and walk and a 1k walk.

The winner in the men’s division for the run was WMU’s Kevin Rook who finished with a time of 16:27. Rounding out the top three were Matthew Babbit at 16:34 and Jessie Parker Jr. at 16:39.

The top finisher on the Women’s side was Abby Johnson with a time of 19:23. She was followed by Michelle Neel at 19:29 and Erin Lumbard at 19:40.

The runners started in front of the Bernhard Center and traveled around East Campus despite the light rains. The hilly course then moved past Sangren Hall and Miller Auditorium before finishing up back at the Bernhard Center where there were refreshments.

The 1K fun walk, which allowed athletes of all ages and abilities to participate, course also started at the Bernhard Center and went around the flagpoles and Chemistry building
This was the 11th year for the homecoming event that serves as an introduction for day for many new WMU students and families as part of the homecoming festivities.
