Students will also have the chance to take a picture with Buster Bronco during the festivities.

“The concept of Western Wednesday is actually very simple,” Erin Kaplan, chair of the University Pride committee in the Western Student Association, said.

“The idea is to encourage WMU students and faculty, as well as individuals in the Kalamazoo community, to wear Western clothes on Wednesdays, to foster University pride.”

According to Kaplan, the concept of Western Wednesdays dates back to 2006. A team of students formed the Spirit Task Force, which is now the University Pride Committee. Josh Kohnhert served as the first official

The whole idea of Western Wednesday is to create excitement of being a WMU student, according to Kaplan.

“I feel that we already go to a school where there is a lot of campus pride, especially compared to other schools, but there is always room for growth,” she said.

To show school spirit, Kaplan encourages students to wear WMU apparel.

“School spirit is very powerful and isn’t something that is necessarily found on every university’s campus,” she said.
