WMU needs more parking security

Dear Editor,

In 2004, the United States spent nearly $93 million on school related vandalism. As the years progress, the rate of vandalism is getting worse. Sydney Barber, the co‑editor of The Stampede, believes destroying other’s property is becoming a huge problem for college students attending school. On average, only one out of five acts of vandalism is reported to the police. More than half of vandals get away with doing the harmful act.

After living at Western for just one week, I ran into a huge disaster. My car, the only thing that I pay for on my own, was vandalized for having a Detroit Tigers sticker on the back window. Not only was my sticker keyed, but my back window is completely ruined. It is not fair for students to pay $300 to get a parking pass and fear their property will get damaged for no apparent reason. If WMU is not going to watch students’ property, there should be no expense for a parking pass.

I suggest that Western Michigan University should take more action to prevent these types of crises from happening by having more security in parking lots. There needs to be people supervising student’s cares 24/7. According to WMU Public Safety, there are in fact no cameras in the student parking lots. Installing cameras in all parking lots would help prevent vandalism on cars. I believe this would make vandals who choose to vandalize more cautious about breaking the law. Vandals should not feel like they can get away with destroying others’ property. Students should feel safe knowing that their property is being taken care of. The world spends millions of dollars on vandalism each year. One of these suggestions just might be the solution we need to make our school a vandalism‑free zone.

Sincerely,

Caley Noble
