“This election is having the same effect on me as marijuana. All of my worst qualities have been exacerbated. I’m paranoid, obsessive, nervous, and totally mental. It’s one long, intense, bad trip. I need to come down. Soon.”
— Larry David, award-winning comedian behind “Seinfeld” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” on how the presidential election is wearing him out.

I’m with you Larry.
Although the date is within reach, I’m having trouble believing that the election is really ending in seven short days. I say “short” with reservations, like when the dermatologist told me the rash would clear up shortly. Short in theory, itchy and festering in reality.
I’ve grown so used to Nov. 4 looming on the horizon that a world without punditry, attack ads, and Wolf Blitzer dissecting a glowing holographic map seems unnaturally quiet and empty. For those reasons and more I decided to cancel my cable and cleanse my system of 24-hour news a few months ago. But that only made matters worse.
Instead of worshiping the CNN holy trinity of Anderson, Larry and Wolf, I fell into the black hole of Internet news and I haven’t seen daylight since.
Night after night I find myself in a hazy news-coma, foaming at the mouth and fearing for my non-existent 401K. Working for a newspaper doesn’t help the situation. My crippling anxiety is inflamed every time an election story makes its way to the copy desk. The pain doesn’t stop there. When I turn on NPR during the ride home, I usually collapse into a lonely mass of flesh and fear courtesy of the BBC World Report.
The long, intense, bad trip that Larry David speaks of is common amongst Democrats. Sure, Obama is way up in the polls and McCain is prepping his concession speech. But its not over till its over, even though its looking pretty much over. Sadly, this paranoia of mine won’t break until the Obama family is redecorating the White House living room.
Or until this rash goes away.

  1. Larry,
You get paramoid because the LAW will arrest you if you’re caught smoking marijuana, you’re obsessive because you are deep down and the marijuana brings it out in you like it does all of my good qualities, you’re nervous because you’re not eating right and you’re nerves can’t handle another day without the B vitamins sthey so dearly deserve (Stay away from drive-thrus Larry), and finally, there’s nothing wrong with being totally mental. I wrote ALL of my greatest writings of poetry and melody’s of song while high. I can’t say enough good about the mental state marijuana puts me in. But as far as the election goes, you need to broaden your horizons and consider there just might be good men and women running for office in other parties besides the Demons and the Republican Nazi party.

  2. The Western Hearald poll indicates Obama leading by a slim 6% margin. We can’t afford eight more years of Republican failures. We need Democrats locally, as much as we need them nationally. Let us not forget that on November 4th.
