“I secretly felt … like I was the last of the real gunslingers.”
—David Letterman, talk show host, after marrying girlfriend Regina Lasko who he’s been dating since 1986.
I’m not quite sure what Letterman means by “gunslinger,” or how marrying a woman he’s been dating for 23 years revokes that status.
Regardless of rumors that Letterman and Lasko have been secretly married for years, how does entering into a legal arrangement with a longtime partner drastically change things.
Unless Letterman didn’t want to make Paul Shaffer jealous …
I’m not usually one to scrutinize the personal lives of celebrities, but I’ll make an exception in this case. First of all, Letterman’s been dating this woman since before I was born. That’s just weird.
Second, Letterman fathered a child (Harry) with Lasko a few years ago. That certainly wasn’t the main impetus for marriage; the kid is 6 years-old now.
It’s an interesting case; Harry’s father is old enough to be his grandfather. Given Letterman’s past heart troubles, it’s sad to think that he may not be around to teach his son how to drive or see him off the college.
As Americans are living longer and more women pursue professional careers, more and more couples are having children in middle age.
Women who delay marriage and childbirth often require the use of fertility drugs if they desire children; these treatments frequently increase the likelihood of plural births (the majority of which produce low-birth-weight babies), adding more dangers to an already hazardous biological process.
I’m a little worried for these kids with old parents. Not only are there more potential birth complications in older women (Lasko was about 43 when she gave birth), but who wants their parents hitting nursing homes when they’re just getting out of college and moving up in the world?
I wish Letterman and his family happiness and success. But Dave, you ’ol gunslinger you, please keep your gun holstered from now on. You may not be around long enough to see another child off into the world.
