—Yankees captain Derek Jeter after Alex Rodriguez decided to have hip surgery.

It’s good to see that Kalamazoo native Derek Jeter still maintains the “team-first” mentality that is often lost in pro sports.
Unfortunately for Jeter, it won’t be enough to keep the attention away from Alex Rodriguez or the things he does all season.
The Yankees have clearly attracted more attention in recent months than any other team. Much of that attention has been brought on by A-Rod.
Whether it be his attitude, his personal life or his steroid use, he has grabbed all the baseball headlines. There are 29 other teams in baseball not named the Yankees, but those teams have taken the backseat to the New York drama.

Baseball has taken many blows in recent years. The mid-1990s has now been dubbed the “Steroids Era,” and the game has taken a backseat to football as the national pastime.
Now, with the doping phase hopefully over, the game is battling the selfish attitudes of players such as Rodriguez and Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez.
Jeter knows about being apart of a team, as do many MLB players. Too bad a lot of them forgot what that means in just a New York minute.
