Finish your homework; people in China and India are starving for your job
—Thomas Friedman, author of “The World is Flat.”
We have a lot to look forward to when we graduate. As a senior, that day is drawing closer with every passing trek down a WMU stairway “closed for winter,” and if you’re anything like me, the job market seems a bit daunting right now. I haven’t looked for a serious job that wasn’t either on campus, an internship, or serving food since I was 18, but I have had time to browse the internet, and I’ve heard there is a nasty recession waiting for us soon.
On top of that, Michigan’s economy happens to be the worst in the country, and since many of us call the great lakes state home, it will be up to us to try and change that fortune.
Thankfully, we do have the assistance of our university in preparing us for interviews, working on our resumes, and setting us up with some internships and job opportunities. That degree we’ll be receiving at the end might not guarantee us a job, but it will gaurantee that we have worked hard, studied more than partied, and gave ourselves every opportunity to succeed.
Now, I need to get back to browsing monster.com and the local classifieds, I can’t spend the next 10 years working for that college painter thing.
