A picture doesn’t stay No. 1 for two weeks without getting great word of mouth. It’s a feel-good movie. That’s what people want to see right now.
— 20th Century Fox distribution executive Bert Livingston on the popularity of “Marley & Me.”
It’s interesting how a movie about a misbehaved dog that dies at the end can be a “feel-good movie.”
One could argue that the family in “Marley and Me” weathered adversity, became closer because of it and still loved the mutt … blah, blah, blah.
When I was a kid, a pet misbehaving meant destruction of property, my Dad becoming angry and (usually) a lingering, unpleasant smell.
Just a few weeks ago, one of my cats peed on the carpet. But was there love and togetherness? Nope. Just the lingering stench of cat urine.
I kept that cat in quarantine while I shampooed and scrubbed the carpet, pried out the tacboards and cut out the carpet pad. What a heartwarming tale of family togetherness!
I still love my cat, but I’ll be darned if I let her do it again. If Marley were my dog, I would get him some obedience training or ship him off to a kennel. But hey, entertainment doesn’t have to make sense. How else could the movie studios make tons of money on the concept of men in tights flying around and battling evil?
In the mean time, I’ll be battling bad pet behavior.
