If you’re just going to say, ‘Oh, that’s the stiff who used to be up in Detroit. They lost all those games. It’s got to be on him.’ I would say, ‘Yeah, I was in Detroit, and you have to blame me. But there’s a lot more to it than that.’
—Former Detroit Lions president Matt Millen, speaking to NBC prior to the start of the NFL playoffs.
If you are like me, when you heard that Matt Millen was going to be a part of the NBC broadcast of this past weekend’s NFL Wild Card games, you wanted to change the channel or throw your shoe through the television.
Millen is fresh off leading Detroit to the most inept season in NFL history. And even though he was not part of the team the entire year, this year’s version of the Lions were built exclusively by the personnel decisions that Millen made. He alienated an entire franchise and its fanbase by making the wrong move every time the opportunity presented itself.
So the question is: Why is he still getting gigs talking about football? Have the last eight years proved nothing? This man should be not allowed within 300 yards of a football field, a microphone or a television camera.
Millen’s saga shows the very thick line between how easy it is to talk about football yet how tricky it can be to actually run a team. Every armchair quarterback can say they have all the answers when watching the game on Sunday, but few actually understand all the ins and outs it would take to be the next great dynasty.
