We live in a ‘gotcha’ society.
—Jeff Frederick, GOP head, on the notoriety of his remark that linked Barack Obama with Osama bin Laden during the 2008 presidential campaign.

No, we live in a ‘criticize anyone for anything’ society. Occasionally, we do blow little things out of proportion. But when you go and compare a U.S. politician with a terrorist leader, you have to be prepared. Someone is going to call you out on your stupidity.
Sadly, we haven’t seen the last of the blatantly offensive and out-of-context quotations about Barack Obama. Remember when Joe Biden called him “articulate” and “clean” and it was taken as a racial insult? Do we want four years (or more) of this kind of childishness?
Scrutiny of what our politicians say is good: scrutiny of what they do is even better. Just don’t blow it out of proportion. If you want to play gotcha with anyone, President Bush is probably your best bet. There are plenty of legitimate gotchas to be had with him.
We may enjoy freedom of speech is this country, but we hardly have carte blanche to slander. Instead of apologizing and keeping his mouth shut, Frederick has the gall to complain when we hold him to his words.
Gotcha.
