We as a society are quick to judge people when they do things they shouldn’t. While it may be a bit early to rule a judgment on what happened to Burress on Friday, this is going to be a tough one for him to get out of.
The former Michigan State standout has already faced two penalties for inappropriate behavior this season. He was suspended one game and fined $117,500 for missing a team meeting in October. Later in the season, he was fined $45,000 for abusing an official during a game.
This one takes the cake, though. Burress had already been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins with a hamstring injury. What was he doing at a Manhattan nightclub? If an athlete is hurt to the extent that he can’t play, hanging out at a bar doesn’t seem too smart.
Football players are human and have the right to a social life. But there is also a level of responsibility, which includes staying away from troublesome nightclubs (see Jones, ‘Pacman’). Burress doesn’t seem to understand that yet. Hopefully, he learns soon. Too often great talent is wasted by great mistakes.
