“I hate cynicism — it’s my least favorite quality and it doesn’t lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen. I’m telling you, amazing things will happen.”
-Conan O’Brien on his final “Tonight Show” on Friday.

I can’t help feeling like this is all somehow my fault.

I mean I have hardly watched Conan O’Brien in the seven months he has been the host of the Tonight Show. Whereas I used to watch “Late Night” on a regular basis, and he remains to me as perhaps the best personality on television.

Based on the support and rallies the past few weeks for O’Brien, I think it’s clear that he has touched countless others in the same way.

I thought it was absolutely necessary of him to target his “cynicism” speech toward young people as he did, to explain that it really doesn’t accomplish anything.

One thing I noticed in this uprising is how quickly strong appreciation of one person can lead to strong resentment toward another.

O’Brien is not done.

Those countless fans who showed their support in his final weeks [and years preceding], should understand that holding a grudge against a network or another host isn’t going to change anything.

Those fans will follow him to his next gig hosting a show at a 7-eleven parking lot as he jokingly eluded.

Wherever O’Brien goes, I think these final words illustrate just how amazing happens. I think it’s safe to say that things didn’t work out exactly the way O’Brien thought they would when he moved to Los Angeles last spring, but he may have gotten something better (besides the $45 million), in the tremendous support from his fans in the closing weeks.

In a wonderfully touching moment, he tried to pass along that lesson to everyone watching.

O’Brien talked about how every comedian dreams of hosting the “Tonight Show,” and he did just that.

He worked really hard, was kind, and something amazing happened.

He will go down as one of the most popular and beloved “Tonight Show” hosts of all time and he only had to do it for seven months.

Amazing things do happen.
