“I learned three important things in college – to use a library, to memorize quickly and visually, to drop asleep at any time given a horizontal surface and fifteen minutes.”
- Agnes DeMille, Dance to the Piper, 1952
Of these three things, being able to fall asleep anywhere, any time, may be the most important. Sleep is an essential part of the college experience; without it, your health can decline, your grades can suffer, and you might just miss out on what could be some of the most memorable experiences of your life.
Often times college students confuse caffeine for sleep, thinking they can struggle through anything with the brief burst of synaptic power it provides. In reality, there is nothing that can compete with a good night’s sleep or a power nap before a big test… or a day of blowing off class for less productive (but not necessarily less worthwhile) pursuits.
So to our existing students, slow down a little and take the time to rest your body and mind. While the demands of college life may have you thinking you’ll catch up on your sleep when you’re dead, you won’t even remember your times here if your brain can’t process what’s going on around you.
And to our incoming freshmen? Sleep enough, but not too much. Scheduling your entire life may not be necessary for the next four years, but making time for the important things should come before your potential World of Warcraft addiction or your Greek Life.
Oh, and learn to use the library. In about four months you’ll wonder how you ever survived without it.
