Letter to the editor: WMU daycare system
Dear Editor,
I feel the daycare system at WMU could stand to be changed. I am a freshman here and I have a 7-month-old son. Since the child has to be 12 months to attend daycare on campus, I was forced to look elsewhere for childcare while in class. It’s costing me a lot of money and I’ve already had to miss class because of this.
Also, right now the bus is my only form of transportation. New state law requires a person to break down, or fold up, their stroller after getting on the bus, which takes time and adds to my hassle. If my son could go to daycare here on campus, it would be covered with my financial aid and just be a short walk away.
We are all adults here on campus and I know that I am not the only person that has a baby—the resident manager at my apartment also has a 7-month-old and asked me where I take my son because hers will need to go in a couple weeks. Almost everyone will have children at some point in their lives. If that point happens to be while we attend Western, we shouldn’t have to wait a whole year for them to attend daycare on campus. Six weeks maybe, but not a whole year.
There is a group for almost everything you can think of at WMU. Why not make a group that serves as a daycare for the students with young babies?
I am asking for Western to consider creating a daycare for its students with babies ages 6 weeks and up on campus. It would make life just a little bit easier for us.
Sincerely ,
Leticia Gaffney
