Letter to the editor: The importance of embracing diversity

Diversity between humans with different backgrounds will always be a work in progress. The more interaction we have with different people from around the world, the better off we are, and the more we will understand each other. We must understand that each one of us is different from one another, which is precisely why diversity must be embraced.

As diversity is embraced, it is my hope that relations between nations will improve. Throughout our lives, technology will continue bridge the gap that has been between people for so long. The abundance of information now available to people around the world has already shown positive effects, Iran being the latest example. Authoritarian regimes will continually have less control over their citizens when free access to information is available through the Internet. No matter your opinion on extremism, terrorism, and militarism, free societies with economic stability and prosperity for the general population have no reason to fight.

Politically speaking, when we know, or should know, that diversity provides for a wider scope of ideas and breeds creativity and understanding, why are we always forced to choose between a donkey and an elephant? The electorate is not representative of the population, and the rules need to be changed to give more candidates a chance to have their say. I encourage everyone to look into what third parties have to offer next election season.
