Letter to the Editor: Record article poorly depicts CD Warehouse

I have just finished reading Allen Brewer’s article, “Local music goes vinyl at CD expo,” which included the following line:

“I prefer Corner Record Shop to CD Warehouse,” said Ian Everson, a WMU
student. “The employees seem to be more knowledgeable.”

As the owner and operator of CD Warehouse, I must express my disappointment
that this part of the article made it to the publishing stage. This was
purportedly an article informing people about the upcoming Kalamazoo Record
Expo, which our store is not even participating in. While I appreciate the
mention of CD Warehouse as a place to obtain vinyl records, there was simply
no need for Mr. Brewer to include a biased endorsement that, frankly,
amounts to an advertisement for the Corner Shop and a dig at our store.
This is not good journalism. I respect Mr. Brewer and Mr. Everson’s
opinions, but they have no place in this type of article. Perhaps Mr.
Brewer has an agenda; perhaps he was just careless. Either way, someone
along the line, from the editor of the A&E section to the editor of the
paper, should have caught these lines and omitted them.

My wife and I purchased CD Warehouse three months ago. It is not a tax
write‑off or a hobby; it’s how we make our living. During these difficult
economic times (particularly for the music business), we don’t appreciate
seeing unprovoked criticism of our hard‑working employees show up in an
informative article. As our store continues to expand and improve, we would
like to support the Western Herald by advertising in its pages (as CD
Warehouse has done in the past), but the desire to do so becomes less when
we receive bad press.

We welcome every type of customer, whether it’s someone looking for the
latest Billboard #1 hit, or an aging hipster who will be happy with nothing
less than the debut 7” by The Jesus Lizard. I wish the local college
newspaper was as welcoming.

  1. Ha, if it was a quote it is completely respectable to put it in print. The Herald should not censor someone’s opinion. A letter like this may not be the way best to get students to your shop. Its almost insulting.

Either way, I wish you the best of luck with your business! It is great to have locally owned stores like yours as a part of our community.
