Letter to the Editor: Fall Welcome Week should be mandatory

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter to address how successful Fall Welcome Week was for freshmen.

It helped students get to know the campus, become more comfortable in their situation, and get to know other freshmen.

The Fall Welcome groups were the main reason why welcome week was so successful.

Student leaders were enthusiastic and that helped freshmen feel the excitement of college, instead of just feeling nervous.

They were also helpful because they know what it’s like to be a freshman here at Western.

Just going places with your Fall Welcome group helps you get to know the campus better, which in the long run helps you find your classes easier.

Welcome Week also helps incoming freshmen get know new people. The groups spend a lot of time together, so freshmen have a chance to get to know others easily.

It is also an opportunity for them to meet people they may not normally associate with.

The activities for fall welcome week varied from being entertaining to helpful and informative.  For example, You Tuber Judson Laipply performed his famous “Evolution of Dance” phenomenon.

The performance was entertaining, but also helpful because he talked about growing up and dealing with new experiences.

The various activities also kept freshmen occupied during the first week of college.

It didn’t give them any time to think about missing home, or missing their friends.  I found that freshmen that sit in their rooms all day feel loneliness, and homesickness.

I think that making Fall Welcome mandatory would have made it even more successful.  Students who skipped out on the events would have found the experience well worth the time.

Sincerely,
Jennifer McCay, freshman

  1. Some people actually come to school for an education, not to sing Kumbaya and talk about dead horses buried on campus. What are you going to do if someone doesn’t show? Kick them from the University? Child please.
