LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Ladd/Rettich slate offers unmatchable leadership
Through my experiences in the Western Student Association this semester, I’ve had the privilege of meeting two fine young men: Andrew Ladd and Christopher Rettich. Ladd, the senate speaker, and Rettich, a former high school student body president, have let their principles do their talking, not their connections.
Once I had a chance to examine their platform and ideas, I was sold. Looking at their previous experiences, I knew they were the team to support.
Andrew and I share a few things in common. We went to high schools that still continue to compete in the same athletic conference. We have also been members of Boy Scouts of America. Although I didn’t finish the program (one of my greatest regrets), I still am full aware of what the program stands for and what it instills in young men nationwide.
As an Eagle Scout, Andrew is one of the many faces of an organization that dates to the 1890s in England. Some famous Eagle Scouts include Neil Armstrong, the late Gerald Ford, and retired astronaut Jim Lovell. Eagle Scouts nationwide are regarded as leaders in their own right.
Luckily, for me, my age hasn’t been an obstacle here at Western. At 25, I’m not getting any younger and want to complete my degree as soon as possible. Andrew and Chris have made it clear they are totally open to all students, no matter the circumstances.
I’m not writing this letter to feed their egos or make people angry. They’ve demonstrated that they’re committed to serving the students here at WMU. They’re willing to take the steps necessary to make sure we can all get what we want out of this institution.
Andrew’s time spent serving the WSA Senate and his 200-plus hours serving the community as a Boy Scout are incomparable.
Chris, although he hasn’t been on campus long, has demonstrated he’s competent to serve the students and assist Andrew as a qualified vice presidential candidate.
In short, Andrew and Chris have exhibited the necessary skills and qualifications required for the job. They’ve both been fully involved here on campus during their time and I foresee that they would have a smooth transition into office if elected.
I don’t know them terribly well, and I haven’t known them too long either, but they are two upstanding Western students who I would be proud to have as WSA president and vice president.
Remember, when you go to the polls this week, vote on the issues, not the names and faces with a few catchy phrases. Exceptional students deserve exceptional leadership.
