Herald Editorial: Western Herald: by the students, for the students

As a new academic year approaches, we here at the Western Herald would like to take the time to share with our readers who we are, what we are here to do and what our visions are for the year.

A lot of you may wonder, “What does the Herald even do?”

For starters, we produce all news related to the WMU and Kalamazoo communities, ranging everywhere from Bronco sports, to concerts at The Strutt, to construction projects on I-94.

In order to produce all of this content, we rely solely on our reporters, who range in age, disciplines, talents and experiences.  Without them, we here at the Herald would not be able to operate.

That said, now is the time the Herald would like to reach out to our readers and ask for your help.

Some of you may be skeptical of our publication and some of you may not like what has been produced by the Western Herald in the past. However, as of May 2010, the Herald has a completely new staff: a new editor in chief, a new series of editors and a fresh set of reporters to fill the gaps of those who have graduated.

We ask that you be open-minded to change.  While we may not make the right decisions all of the time, we are going to try and try again until we get it right.

In order to produce that change, we need our readers to be supportive of what we do and join in on the cause.  The Western Herald holds an open-door policy and will never turn away a student for any reason.

If you have a concern with what we are doing, never feel afraid to e-mail the editor in chief or any of the section editors to let them know.  We are all open to suggestions in how to improve what we do here.

If you have an idea for a story, drop an e-mail or a phone call to one of us.  We cannot be everywhere at once so there will be times where things will slip through our fingers.  But we ask of you to help us out, send us press releases, send us e-mails of events that are going on with your Registered Student Organization, anything.

If you want to get involved at the Herald, e-mail us!  We are constantly looking forreporters in the areas of news, sports and arts.  Also, we have opportunities for positions as an opinion columnist and as a member of the editorial board.

Contrary to what has been said in the past, we do not segregate and limit the positions to only journalism majors or minors.  Any student from any discipline is welcome to apply for a position.

In fact, we strongly encourage students of all majors and minors apply because the more people we have here with diverse backgrounds, the better that we can serve our readers with the most up-to-date information in all realms.

This is the year that the Western Herald wants to make changes.

But in order to do so, we need your help. Like Henry Ford said, “Coming together is a beginning.  Keeping together is progress.  Working together is success.”
