HERALD EDITORIAL: The Super Bowl is a great excuse to get together with friends

Every year, there is a party unlike any other.  People gather all over the United States and the world to watch the Super Bowl.  For many sports fans, it’s a chance to witness another great championship team and some of the best pro football players in the world.

For others, it’s a chance to witness some of the best commercials of the year and it gives many a reason to get together and throw a party.

Heck, you don’t even have to like football.  For some, Sunday’s game will be the first time all season that they’ve watched a game on television.  Some watching probably don’t even know where the Cardinals are from (Arizona) or who the dude is on the Pittsburgh Steelers with the long, curly black hair (Troy Polumalu).  Most people probably don’t even know that the game’s in Tampa Bay this year.

Yes, it’s a big day for football and sports fans across the country.  It’s almost equally as big (if not more) for companies looking to pitch their idea or sell their product.

Thirty-second slots for advertisements were going at about $3 million each, according to NBC.com.  Anheuser-Busch, Coca-Cola and Pepsi are all figuring to be big players during the Super Bowl this year, just like they are just about every year.

The Super Bowl is consistently the highest-rated show every single year and it’s a great platform for companies to reach out to their consumers.

Many specifically watch the Super Bowl just so they can catch the funniest commercials and the new products.

While anticipating and voting on the best ads are fun, getting together with friends and family is another great reason to have a party for the Super Bowl.  It’s a chance to share great food, see old friends and meet new ones.  It’s a reason to have a party, even if you don’t care about the teams involved.

The halftime show has also always proven to be interesting, if not shocking.  Many fans recall the infamous Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson halftime show.  We’re not sure if you’ll see any shocking revelations from Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band during this year’s halftime show, but you’ll definitely hear a lot of good music.

Even if you aren’t a football fan, you may find yourself drawn to the spectacular atmosphere of the event.  Thousands of people are cheering, screaming with camera flashes going off all over the stadium and it is pretty hard to ignore.

Football is arguably the biggest sport in America and Sunday is football’s biggest day.

So, instead of completely ignoring the Super Bowl just because you don’t follow football, don’t just throw in the towel.

Get out this Sunday and enjoy the party, tasty food and some good company.  If nothing else, you’ll be treated to some funny commercials to warm you up.
