HERALD EDITORIAL: Looking back on 2008-09
The editorial board has looked back, our academic year completed. 2008-09 was a little wack, mixed with heavy topics and events.
We began with election candidates and November gong show festivities. Ybema and Cooney had Western roots, Levin might as well have been uncontested.
President Obama got tons of ink, along with most politics in general.
Obama mania swept our campus, his inaugural echoed Camelot. Obama gear was everywhere and more. Colorful coins sold on late night TV.
Don’t think Bill-O and friends are journalists, at least Stewart calls himself a comic. Afghanistan might be a huge quagmire, but we did get Guantanamo shut down.
Obama has a fresh laid-back style, and print newspapers may want non-profit.
We’re confused with a few school policies, but appreciate WMU’s excellence.
We had our WSA election race, well train wreck contests are still fun to watch. But we can be thankful for Dunn’s hard work, and remember Haenicke’s legacy.
We need more classes available here, and a real student union serving beer. Parking services is out of control, and all our documents should be online.
We should save East Hall to keep some beauty and thank DSK for bringing us home. Cell phones in computer labs are fun, and campus smoking policies are dumb.
Western might pull in a medical school and could use winter carnival events. Bronco bucks cannot be used everywhere and it’s nice Bronco Bash is on Fridays.
The economy focused us on jobs and how we need to prepare until then.
What do we need to find a jobby job? The career center and self promotion. We should clean up our Facebook perception, to give us a chance in love and in life.
Now that summer is not so far away, we might have time for some local music. We can chill on the drunken class time notes, and try to find a new job for next fall.
The lighter side of sports amused us some, and we mostly left sports betting alone.
Thank God the sports writers were on the board, they took March Madness and the Super Bowl. Intramural sports are not life and death, we should attempt to be nice to the refs.
A couple things were just a bit random, which let us touch on some random topics.
Selling our virginity could be sad, and hurting animals makes us real mad.
Volunteering is good for little kids and Relay for Life benefits our friends.
We should protect the helpless and the weak, maintain environmental quality. Understand our campus diversity and build Western’s Kalamazoo status.
Backpacking through Europe might be a plan, to take some time and learn how to protest.
Try and think a little about fresh ink, and spend some time in the Rec getting fit.
So, enjoy your summer and take a break, we’ll look forward to seeing you all next year.
