HERALD EDITORIAL: Interested in journalism? Consider a job with the Western Herald
For those seeking a job and interested in an open flow of opinions about their local community, the Western Herald is hiring and may have a position that’s right for you.
Currently, the Western Herald is seeking applicants for a variety of positions hiring for the next school year.
Each of these positions offers unique opportunities for students, including career-building skills and leadership experience.
The Herald is an integral part of the Kalamazoo community because it’s the only paper covering extensive campus issues alongside local, national and international coverage as well.
Many students may not know how they can become writers and editors, what the jobs entail or where the Herald office is located.
As a writer or editor, students can speak their voice in a way that few other outlets offers.
The Western Student Association is catered to Registered Student Organizations and academic colleges, but for those students who aren’t directly involved with that, their opinions may go unheard.
With access to the Herald, the viewpoints of the newsroom go directly out to the student body as unfiltered as possible.
No RSO or campus group can offer students that same kind of publicity.
Each position is different and is an integral part of the newspaper.
Editor positions are leadership positions. They hire writers and delegate writing assignments to them. They edit the content that comes in, lay out pages, make decisions on whether stories run or not and hold meetings.
As a copy editor, your shifts are tailored around your school schedule and can range from one night a week to four, depending on your availability.
Knowledge of AP style is required and knowledge of InDesign is preferred. All positions also entail compensation, the same as any other campus job.
The Web Manager updates and manages www.westernherald.com and looks for ways to establish different niches online compared to the print edition. The Web Manager position is a valuable experience for anyone looking to design Web sites and have an active role in making the newsroom a 24 hour, seven days a week outlet. The Web Manager is in charge of the creative design of www.westernherald.com.
The Herald is always looking to hire writers for every section.
Students have to have an interest in writing but do not have to be a journalism major. We are looking for people who have the ambition to take on stories and do them well. Writers are assigned stories depending on how many they want to take on.
All editor applicants must be full-time students with an academic standing of at least a 2.5 cumulative grade-point average.
Journalism as a declared major or minor is not a requirement, but a good knowledge of newspaper writing style is helpful.
The best part of working at the Western Herald?
You have your say of what goes into your local newspaper.
What matters to you probably matters to the majority of students, and by working with the Herald, a dialogue can be opened about issues that affect all of us.
That is not a luxury to be taken lightly, as many people are not afforded the same freedoms the Herald offers.
