A letter from the editor
By Katrina Murphy
Editor in Chief
William Drayton once said that “change starts when someone sees the next step.”
As the new editor in chief of the Western Herald, I am looking forward to making changes in the way we view, cover and share news on Western Michigan University’s campus.
With advances in technology, journalism is making a drastic leap from print to electronic coverage and we at the Herald must be prepared to make those changes as well.
With that being said, our summer publication will be an opportunity to experiment. Not only will you as readers see changes in our print editions, but there will also be new additions to our website with more incorporation of video and multimedia features.
This is where all of you come in.
The reasoning behind these transformations is to improve upon what we have already established here at the Herald and move forward to adapt to changing times.
But it is also to satisfy what you as students want to read about and see covered in your school newspaper.
So I am asking all of you to submit ideas of changes you would like to see within the pages of the Herald. Are there certain things you would like to see more of, such as opinion columns or cartoons? Do you wish there were certain types of stories that were covered more frequently? Maybe you know of people or events that would make for a great feature story.
Whatever you are thinking about the Herald, I want to hear it. You can be as open and honest as you wish or you could give a simple one sentence answer. Either way, I am interested in what you have to say.
To submit ideas, e-mail whideas@gmail.com.
Although it will take awhile, I will personally respond to each and every one of you that submit an idea to me. Without input from readers, it is going to be very hard to make changes towards what you want to see, so I strongly urge you all to take an active part in this.
I look forward to hearing from you all very soon.

It be nice if you’d take a conterversial issue and give students an opportunity to give there opinion. For instance, if you discussed abortion, you might have people who are pro-choice on one side and pro-life on the other. Also, you might have a forum where people can say what they do or don’t like about Western.
I was able to simply search for FACEBOOK and my page would come up. Now I get the Western Herald. MAKE IT STOP.
