LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Freshman thankful for helpful directions
Dear Editor,
As an incoming Western Michigan University freshman, I was apprehensive like most of my fellow classmates for my first day of college life.
I was anxious to not only locate the building, but also to locate my class within it, a task that seemed to be insurmountable.
While walking around the weekend before classes began, I found the halls that all my classes were in, but was unable to enter them to find my classrooms.
On the first day of class, to my surprise, there was a very helpful staff member standing just inside the front entrance of Wood Hall guiding students to their classes.
My anxiety instantly disappeared. I was so thankful that a staff member was standing available, and willing to answer my questions.
My first day on campus was so much easier because of this assistance.
It was comforting to know that the staff at Wood Hall made an extra effort to help the incoming freshman.
When talking with my classmates, many described having trouble finding their classes.
Many were late to their classes because they went from floor to floor searching for the correct classroom.
When I shared my positive experience at Wood Hall, they all wished that they had that resource available to them.
Hopefully next year there will be staff members standing near the entrances of most, if not all, the larger academic buildings directing incoming freshman to their classes for the first few days of college.
I would once again like to take this opportunity to thank the staff members of Wood Hall for making me feel welcome and relieving my first day anxiety.
Sincerely,
Jill Tapper, freshman
