WSA presidential election begins

With the election for the new Western Student Association president only a month away, candidates Aaron Booth and Andrew Ladd are keeping a good pace and Western Michigan students interested.

Andrew Ladd, currently serving as Speaker of the WSA senate, had only good things to say about his campaigning so far.

“I have a lot of optimism about the campaign,” Ladd said. “I like hearing what students have to say; they have helped me develop my platform.”

And what would a campaign be without competition? The first presidential debate will be held next Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Bernhard Center, and will be monitored by the Student Election Council.

“Joey and I are both really excited about the debate,” Booth said. “We’re ready for it, we’ve been preparing for it, bring on the questions.”

Students are able to ask the candidates questions, and then a debate will follow.

“I’m excited for it, it should be good,” Ladd said. “I want to hear what the students have to say, it’s not one hundred percent about what I think.”

To add a twist to the campaign, the Booth campaign has headed towards a different approach to their campaign, running on what is known as a “slate.”

A slate is when the candidate chooses to choose a part of their cabinet ahead of time, instead of waiting for applications for cabinet positions to be submitted after the election.

Booth has chosen Erin Kaplan, a cabinet member of University Pride and a writer for the Western Herald, and Kristopher Banks, who is on the Spring into the Streets committee and former Homecoming Coordinator, to be a part of their 2010-11 administration.

“They really love the university,” Booth said.

A slate has not been used in a WSA election since the 1990s, Booth said.

“We chose to run on a slate so students can get a sneak peek of what we are looking for, and we want to bring back tradition,” Booth added.
