At Wednesday’s meeting, the Western Student Association welcomed guest speaker Diane Anderson, vice president for student affairs, and voted on five new appointments.
Anderson spoke on the many improvements underway on campus. Anderson commented on the last completed task on campus, the Bernhard Student Center.
She said she wants the center to be viewed as “the place to be” for students as well as a hub of campus activity.
The first step to doing this, according to Anderson, was to move student organizations and activities to the Bernhard Center.
Ongoing plans for campus improvement include renovating residence halls and the building of additional apartments starting with the Western View complex.
The WSA announced a Western Wednesday for Wednesday, Sept. 29 by the flagpoles. Students are encouraged to don their WMU wear.
Each candidate for the new appointments were given the opportunity to talk about themselves and their qualifications as well as answer questions regarding improvements and issues in their areas.
Andrew Ladd was voted the new allocations committee vice chairperson. Ladd said that the allocations committee’s first change should be to be better organized. He has created binders for each allocation so a visual reference would be available for each.
Also joining the allocations committee was Lygia Mueller, an international graduate student from Germany. Lygia said she will make the committee more welcoming for students.
The committee provides many services to registered student organizations. The committee intends to meet with RSOs and assist in planning events.
Alex Roman, a senior majoring in public relations, was appointed justice. As a part of the judicial council, Roman said he hopes to find a balance between being proactive and using active restraint.
In order to avoid being overactive, Roman said he wants improve the focus of the council by not getting involved in things the council shouldn’t be involved in.
Appointment of political affairs chair was given to Lauren Hearit, a junior majoring in public policy. Hearit said she would like to see students getting registered to vote for the upcoming midterm elections.
Senior Destinee Ray, a social work and organizational communications major, will be taking up the position of diversity guidance chair. Having gone through several diversity-training sessions, Ray said she defines diversity as, being educated on different things, different cultures, and different ethnicities.
“How exactly can you know who you are if you don’t know about the things around you?” Ray said.
Ray said her goal is to create a common ground among all students. She said she hopes to have students involved in creating a diverse community where everyone can come together.
