At the Oct. 28 meeting of the Western Student Association, members showed their spirit by dressing up for Halloween and hosting two speakers promoting “Bronco Pride,” but the real discussion centered on how to get the rest of the student body revved up for the last home football game on national television.
Dianne Anderson, Ph.D., vice president of Student Affairs, and Eileen Russell, director of sports marketing spoke with WSA about the importance of the increase in attendance and spirit at the upcoming home football game on Nov. 24.
“We are really wanting a good turnout for this game because it is the last home game and it will be televised,” Anderson said.
Russell and Anderson asked the WSA how they might find a way to fill the student section at the last home game against Ball State. Ideas ranged from a pep rally the night before the game to a variety of free foods handed out at the game, to the idea of a famous athlete making an appearance. The possibility of a shuttle to the stadium for students who live off campus was also brought up.
“I really like the idea of a pep rally before the game,” said LaTerrica Silvers, the senator from the College of Education and Human Development. “Everyone likes free stuff.”
Students who are interested in giving out any ideas for incentives to improve spirit at the game can e-mail Russell at elaine.russel@wmich.edu.
“We need to show the nation our school pride,” she said. “We want the student section full, that is our goal.”
The meeting moved onto five new appointments in WSA: Johnathon Freye to the Select Committee on Rules Bylaws and Administration, Alex Bell as the IT Coordinator, Josh Weaver was appointed Political Affairs Chair and Josh Kohnert and Chris Kivel to Associate Justices.
The topic of reinstating the Michigan Promise Scholarship was addressed as well. Three weeks ago, WSA sent letters out to all 38 Michigan representatives and Governor Jennifer Granholm, and so far four representatives have written back including metro-Detroit representatives Buzz Thomas, Detroit Senator Raymond E. Basham, Deborah Cherry, and Gilda Z. Jacobs.
