On Sept. 30, the Western Student Association tabled approval of new allocations, guidelines and bylaws, and discussed the appointment of five new members of the Allocations Committee.

The meeting started off with the announcement of WSA’s United Way campaign in the month of October.

“It’s a good way to help people in the Kalamazoo community,” Nate Knappen, WSA president, said.

After announcements, the WSA broke off into committees and discussed future goals for their committees. They then regrouped to discuss the approval of the allocation guidelines for 2009-10.

The topic launched a long discussion about how Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) balance their budgets and spend the money WSA provides them.

Especially questioned was how RSOs spend money on their events, and how they and the WSA decide if the event was a success or not. It was also questioned whether RSOs’ financial records are kept confidential, so that if someone was impressed by another RSO’s campaign, they could see what they did financially to make it so successful.

It was eventually clarified that RSO financial records are available to view.

“You can submit a request to see the spending of an RSO,” WSA Speaker of the Senate Andrew Ladd said.

Amendments were suggested for the allocations guidelines, but when voted upon did not pass. Eventually the approval for the allocations guidelines was tabled to be discussed next week by a vote of 21 in favor, 2 against and 1 abstain to allow WSA members more time to read the allocation guidelines and make amendments to them before approving it.

The WSA also tabled the approval of the 2009-10 Allocation’s bylaws until next week to allow WSA senators more time to read the bylaws and make amendments before approving them. It was emphasized by the WSA cabinet that all senators should read and make amendments, if they desire, to both documents before attending the next meeting.

So I saw this headline was thought to myself, we clearly did not approve the bylaws or guidelines, they were tabled. Once I read the article, this article does correctly describe what went on, so I am confused as to why the headline chosen for the article makes it seem like we passed bylaws at this meeting.
