On Saturday, Dec. 19, more than 1,000 Western Michigan University students will become alum. Throughout the day, three different commencement ceremonies will take place in Miller auditorium.

WMU President, John Dunn, will preside over the ceremonies.

The first ceremony will be at 9 a.m. for students graduating from the colleges of Education and Human Development and Engineering and Applied Sciences.

The second ceremony, at noon, will be for graduates of Extended University Programs, College of Health and Human Services, and Haworth College of Business.

Thirdly, the last ceremony for graduates of the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Aviation and Fine Arts, will be held at 3 p.m.

It is an exciting time for many graduates. “Although Western has given me some of the best years of my life, I feel that I am ready to move on from the wonderful family I have made here,” said fifth-year student Nick Howell, a major in Organizational Communications.

“Western has given me so much, in terms of a great education, some of the best friends and times of my life, and it truly will always be near and dear to my heart,” he added.

Of the 1,800 plus degrees, nearly 1,300 will be given out at the bachelor’s level, nearly 500 at the master’s level, over 30 at the doctoral level, and one specialist degree.

The event will feature music by the Western Brass Ensemble, conducted by Deanna Swoboda. WMU’s chapter of the Phi Mu Alpha Singonia, conducted by Zecharoah Shrum, will perform the national anthem and the alma mater. New graduates will be welcomed as new alumni president of the WMU Alumni Association, Richard Bailey.

The event will be broadcasted live on Channel 5 of EduCABLE, WMU’s cable system, and on Public Media Network Channel 22, Public Media Network.

TotalTECH, in the WMU bookstore, will be selling recordings of the ceremonies in DVD and VHS formats for $25.00.

Along with December, WMU holds graduation in June, April and August. For further information on graduation, visit wmich.edu/commencement.
