Western Michigan and Central Michigan Universities are partnering up again for a campus-wide Red Cross blood drive, at the College of Health and Human Services starting Jan. 19 to Jan. 28.
This is the 12th year in a row the two universities have worked together to get students motivated to donate blood and to replenish low blood supplies in Michigan’s hospitals.
“We have a lot of hospitals that are in need for blood,” C.J. Schmiege, blood donor recruitment representative for the Red Cross’s Great Lakes Blood Services Region, said. “Coming out of the holiday season we have lower blood supplies because less people donate during these times, this blood drive should help us get back to where we should be.”
To meet the requirements to donate blood one must be 17 years old, be over 110 pounds, and in generally good health. For more eligibility requirements and good tips to know before donating blood potential donors can call (877) 835-5736.
There will be nine total blood drives at different locations across campus through the 19 to the 28 of January. At each of the locations students will be entered into a raffle to win a variety of prizes such as a 32-inch television, iPod, Wii system, and a gift certificate to Meijer.
If one is unable to donate blood, they can still volunteer. at the blood drives. Just contact the Red Cross either through Facebook or on campus.
All locations are open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
