(Sarah Randall and Karie Kupier / Western Herald) WSA members show off their school spirit at a meeting last year in the Bernhard Center by wearing their WMU gear for Western Wednesdays.

In the spirit of Homecoming week here at Western Michigan University, the Western Student Association (WSA) is holding a special Western Wednesday at the flagpoles from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 1.
The “flagpoles” are situated near the center of campus right next to the Wesley Foundation and Lee Honors College.

Western Wednesdays is a tradition dating back three years started by the WSA.  The WSA created the spirit committee, which is currently headed by Stacey Nordstrand, to raise the campus pride of all WMU students and faculty.

The tradition of Western Wednesdays calls for all students and faculty to show their campus pride by wearing any type of WMU apparel.

School apparel includes hats, buttons or shirts.  Prizes for those that wear their school pride to the flagpoles will include stickers, lip balm and tissue packets.

Western Wednesdays are put on every Wednesday of every week during the school year.  So even if the WSA is not hosting a specific event at the flagpoles, students can still wear their WMU apparel on campus.

“It would be amazing to see most everyone on campus every Wednesday wearing their WMU gear to show their pride in this university,” said Stacey Nordstrand, spirit chair of the WSA. “The spirit committee is going to work very hard this year to promote school spirit anywhere and everywhere we can.”

Most of the homecoming court will make a stop at the flagpoles to meet with the student body sometime during the event. If students are interested in meeting some of the campus leaders, be sure to drop by for the meet and greet.

The excitement of Western Wednesday doesn’t end there.  This week at the flagpoles, the WSA is encouraging students to have fun with their friends and the inflatables that will be around the flagpoles.

The pledge book will also be present at this event and students that did not get a chance to sign it during Bronco Bash will get a second chance.  Signing the pledge book is a commitment to wearing WMU gear every Wednesday.

Students do not need to sign the pledge book in order to wear WMU gear.
