VOX promotes Planned Parenthood on campus

Planned Parenthood is more than just an abortion clinic.  It provides affordable sexual healthcare to people of all ages, according to the Web site.

“It’s funny the misconceptions that people have about Planned Parenthood,” VOX President Lindsey Williams said.

For all the voices of women on campus, and those interested in sexual health, there is VOX.

VOX is Western Michigan University’s Registered Student Organization (RSO) serving as the voice for Planned Parenthood on campus.

VOX holds weekly meetings on Thursdays in the Bernhard Center, at 7 p.m. This week they plan to discuss what’s happening in the future regarding women’s reproductive rights.

“It’s mainly about education,” Williams said.

Commonly known as Voices for Planned Parenthood, VOX’s main goal is to inform women of their reproductive rights, contraception, STD training, health, pregnancy and more.

Members discuss things happening around the country, Williams said.  They also talk about Planned Parenthood involvement around the country and what legislation is doing to promote women’s rights.
VOX has promoted at a series of events including the Ani DeFranco concerts at the State Theater, Pro-Choice Rallies in Bronson Park, an annual feminist poetry slam, Bronco Bash, and more, according to the Planned Parenthood of South Central Michigan Web site.

They were also responsible for bringing the Trojan bus to campus earlier this semester, Williams said.
The RSO does tabling twice a month in the Bernhard Center to promote itself.  People are encouraged to fill out postcards to send to state legislators that promote women’s health.  Free condoms are also handed out.
“Many people at the tabling stop by to show support, but people don’t have time [to join the organization],” Williams said.  “People want to be there and be active.”
