As of June 5, Sindecuse Health Center has confirmed three cases of the H1N1 virus, otherwise known as the “swine flu.”
The university has diagnosed a case every week for the past three weeks. Each student confirmed to have H1N1 has fully recovered with antiviral medication in less than a week.
“Fortunately, there have been no known complications associated with confirmed cases of H1N1 through Sindecuse Health Center,” said Sindecuse Director Lisa Marshall, M.D.
“Campus and community media have done an excellent job of educating the public about signs and symptoms of H1N1 and the importance of seeking medical care early during the course of illness,” Marshall said.
“All of the H1N1 cases confirmed at Sindecuse came to the health center within the first couple of days of their symptoms and were successfully treated,” she added.
Sindecuse is keeping a tally of the number of cases confirmed on the H1N1 statistics page of their Web site, www.wmich.edu/shc.
Since Sindecuse may not receive information about students who receive care from community clinicians, the tally on the Web site counts cases only confirmed in-house. Marshall urged any students who show signs of the flu to isolate themselves, rest and see a caregiver within the first 48 hours.
