Catherine Lenard is a Western Michigan University alumna with a Bachelor of Arts in graphic design and a big heart for college students.
For the start of a new school year, a fresh start and all things self-discovery, she published an affirmation last month called, “The Freedom Anthem of Your True Self.” Although the printable affirmation, or poem, can be downloaded by anyone on her website, she especially wants to help students cope with the difficult times she faced in college by reading and signing the statement, she said.
The affirmation is in association with International Self-Awareness Month in September. WMU has not officially recognized the month this year.
“There is a lot of power in signing your name and committing yourself to your true self,” she said. “The more you become self-aware, the more you can control what happens in your life. You understand other people.”
The “Freedom Anthem” was designed entirely by Lenard and features the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in the background. Lenard lives in Three Oaks, Mich., and is an author and public speaker.
“International Self-Awareness Month puts a spotlight on the value of knowing yourself and radiating that spotlight outward,” she said.
