Student attacked for purse Monday night

Students should be on the lookout for an attempted purse thief.

An unknown male dressed in black wearing a ski mask attacked a female student Monday night between 9:45 and 10 p.m. on West Michigan Avenue between The Oaklands and the Student Rec Center, Deputy Chief Blaine Kalafut, WMU Department of Public Safety, said.

The man attempted to take the student’s purse, but she fought back and he fled in an unknown direction, with no vehicle seen leaving the area.

Students, especially female, should never walk alone at night, or use campus escort service, Kalafut said.

Anyone with information about this incident should call the WMU Department of Public Safety at 387-5555 or Kalamazoo Silent Observer at 343-2100.

  1. “Students, especially female, should never walk alone at night or use campus escort service, Kalafut said.”

You should fix that quote by replacing the OR with ‘but use campus escort service instead.” It seems as though you are implying that they shouldn’t use the escort service. If would fix that before someone gets confused.
