Spreading her wings at WMU
Gay Walker’s acrylic painting, “Cycle of the Butterfly,” is one of her many multi-media artworks on display in the “Journey Through Cancer” exhibit in WMU’s College of Health and Human Services second floor art gallery.
Walker, the program coordinator for WMU’s Holistic Health Care Program, invites students, faculty, staff and community members to come together to share her artwork. The exhibit has its opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. on Feb. 4 and will continue to be on display throughout the spring semester.
Inspired by her own battle with breast cancer, Walker’s exhibit features paintings, sculpture, collages, poetry and other various mediums that she used to express herself while struggling with her illness. Revealing more than pain and strife, Walker shows another side of the battle through her artwork: the personal healing process that it allowed her to rise above and overcome.

Today Ms. Walker came into my Holistic 1000 class. She talked about art therapy and then showed us how art therapy helped her throughout her journey. Once I had left the class and thought about what she had said I realized how much more I appreciate my health and my own life. She is a very nice woman who is a very strong role model, and I thank her for coming into class today.
