As Thanksgiving break approaches and the end of the semester following there are a few things students need to remember and prepare for.
In preparation for the break, Dining services for Davis/Draper, Burnham, and Valley I are officially closed as of Nov. 25.
Services for Valley II and Hoekje/Bigelow will be closed as of 1 p.m. Wednesday. Dining services will re-open for breakfast 9 a.m. Dec. 1.
“This is a schedule that has been followed for many, many years,” Director of Dining Services Judy Gipper said.
Beginning 11:59 p.m. Dec. 5 all residence halls will begin 24/7 quiet hours for finals. Resident halls will close the following week at 7 p.m. Dec. 12 for the holiday break, and reopen at 9 a.m. on Jan. 4.
“As a rule of thumb if we can hear you two doors down, it going to be too loud,” said Assistant Director of Resident Life Laura Darah referring to the appropriate decibel level during finals.
During both Thanksgiving and Winter break The Office of Resident Life staff will be conducting room checks. Students are reminded to close and secure windows, take out trash, shut off and unplug appliances, clear heat registers of obstructions and to take home valuables.
Darah said that two staff members will be in each room at all times, and that any contraband (alcohol, candles, weapons, ect.) in plain site will be confiscated and the student reprimanded accordingly.
“Our policies are kind of on a continuum,” Darah said referring to the severity of punishment for a dorm violation.
“Something minor is on a minor scale, something major is more on a major scale,” Darah said. “[This is] a standard procedure at every institution I have been at.”
Students need not move out of their rooms if they plan to stay in the same room next semester. However, if students are moving out to study abroad, transferring to another residence hall, or simply leaving the dorms for good, they should contact their resident advisor if they are unaware of what to do in preparation, Darah said.
Before finals students will have an opportunity to unwind. Residence Life will sponsor “Rockin’ the Rec” which will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. Dec. 5 in the Western Michigan University Recreation Center.
“Essentially we wanted to provide a fun, stress-free outlet, have a little fun before you have to get serious,” Darah said.
According to the Office of Residence Life Winter Break Information flyer “Rockin’ the Rec” will also feature “Guitar Hero” in addition to the inflatables provided by Vertical Edge Entertainment.
