Yesterday, Western Michigan University’s Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity held their 3rd Rent-a-Puppy fundraiser to benefit the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Southwest Michigan from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the university’s Goldsworth Valley Gazeboo.
With a photo ID and a $5 donation, students and community members were able to rent a puppy or dog for a half hour. Over 20 dogs of all kind were available.
Patricia Smith, head of Phi Sigma Pi’s fundraising committee, hopes that the event will top the amount they have raised before.
“In the past we have raised a little over $800 total. So obviously as we build on this event we hope to top that.”
After making a donation, all that participants had to do was sign a participation waver and sign up for a puppy of their choice. Then were given a doggy treat, a doggy bag and a half an hour to play with the pet.
“This year we have teamed the fundraiser with a service event and we are running a supply drive at the same time,” Smith said.
Students who brought supplies for the SPCA such as food and toys, had their photos taken with the puppy, or they could donate an extra dollar for a photo.
Smith said Rent-a-Puppy is a perfect fundraiser for students who like to be active while doing something good for the community.
“It is a simple and fun way to support a good charity,” Smith said. “Who doesn’t like playing with puppies and dogs?”
