Students should be on the lookout for an alleged purse thief, according to police.

An unknown male dressed in black wearing a ski mask attacked a female student Monday night between 9:45 and 10 p.m. on West Michigan Avenue between The Oaklands and the Student Recreation Center, according to Deputy Chief Blaine Kalafut, of Western Michigan University’s Department of Public Safety.

The man attempted to take the student’s purse, but she fought back and he fled in an unknown direction, with no vehicle seen leaving the area.

Students, especially female, should never walk alone at night or if they are alone they should use campus escort services, Kalafut said.

Anyone with information about this incident should call the WMU Department of Public Safety at 387-5555 or Kalamazoo Silent Observer at 343-2100.
