This Saturday, Nov. 14, OUTspoken, the Registered Student Organization for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Allied (LGBTA) students at Western Michigan University is hosting their annual Pride Prom for students of all sexual orientations. OUTspoken has hosted this prom for over a decade as it has had continued success.
“It is a second chance prom for LBGT (Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, and Transgender) and Allied [supporters of LBGT] students because a lot of LBGT students weren’t able to bring who they wanted to prom or dress how they wished at their prom to express themselves as they are,” said David Topping, President of OUTspoken.
The event will held from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. at the Radisson Plaza Hotel at Kalamazoo Center. Anyone is welcome to this event regardless of his or her sexual orientation. Pride Prom is going to be a welcoming event geared towards those never had a real prom.
“This is an open, safe, and accepting environment for students to come and have a prom and really enjoy themselves in the comfort of good people,” Topping said.
Pride Prom is co-sponsored by the Campus Activities Board, the Western Student Association and the Office of LBGT Student Services. Womyn’s Equality will give additional volunteer support.
The cost of Pride Prom is $5. Tickets are available at the OUTspoken office in the Student Organization Center and will also be sold at the door.
For more information about Pride Prom and other events, LBGT and Allied students meet every week on Wednesday at 9pm in the faculty lounge in the Bernhard Center.
