This week’s Western Wednesday will feature a special event called Success Is My Only Option, or S.I.M.O.O. for short.
The event will be between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the flagpoles. It will be sponsored Young Black Males Support Network, the Center for Academic Success Programs, the Western Student Association and the Division of Multicultural Affairs.
According to the press release, the Goal for S.I.M.O.O. is to present to students programs that they may not know about, but could assist them in achieving their goals of a college degree. Some examples of programs include the Writing Center, tutoring labs and computer labs.
The event will offer one on one meetings with Western faculty as well as a pledge for students to sign that shows their commitment to academic success and wristbands with S.I.M.O.O. inscribed on them.
The President of the Young Black Males Support Network Ryan Gassaway came up with the idea of S.I.M.O.O.
“Growing up with my younger brothers we always talked about how we were going to get to a better place,” said Gassaway. “We originally said failure is not an option, but eventually it turned into success is my only option.”
That drive to make something of himself led Gassaway to where he is now, and the hope is that he will be able to reach back and open the door to success for someone else.
When Gassaway presented his idea many were excited about it.
“We hope for this to be a yearly event, hopefully sooner in the academic year so that we can set the tone,” said Erika David, Coordinator of Service-Learning.
Students who attend will also to be treated to hot chocolate and a performance by Kinetic Affect at noon.
