Representatives from International Student Volunteers (ISV), a nonprofit corp. will be holding informational meetings September 11 looking for students to volunteer overseas this summer.
The meetings will be held every hour from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in room 211 in the Bernhard Center.
ISV accepts over 4,000 students from all over the world every year to participate in volunteer programs either working with people on community development projects or working with animals and the environment on conservation projects.
Students selected will have the opportunity to travel with students from all over the world on volunteer projects to Australia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Eastern Europe, Ecuador, New Zealand, Thailand or South Africa.
The program can last anywhere from two weeks to three months, but the standard program is one month.
The first two weeks of the standard program will either be spent on community development projects or conservation projects.
The second half of the standard one-month program will be more of an adventure and cultural tour including activities ranging from white water rafting, to glacier climbing, waterfall rappelling and more.
Marcus Wicken, an ISV American Campus Representative, who will be helping with the meetings on Thursday, said that they are looking for students who want to learn and experience.
“This program is a fantastic way to spend your summer, giving back and having the time of your life overseas,” Wicken said.
Students interested in this program need to fill out an application that will be handed out at the meetings.
ISV will be accepting around 50 students from WMU to participate in the program. Those accepted into the program will hear back from ISV within a week.
The one-month program will cost a student $3,195 and a two week program will cost $1,795.
Wicken said that ISV helps students raise the money needed for the program and that students might be able to use the volunteering experience for academic credit.
The meetings held on Thursday will last around 40 minutes and students are advised to attend at the beginning of the hour so as not to miss any information.
