At this week’s Friends of the University Libraries annual meeting, a new scholarship will be announced followed by an update on the proposals to move the archives and regional history collection.
The meeting will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13 at the Western Michigan University Archives and Regional History Collection in East Hall and the Friends of the University Libraries will announce a scholarship recognizing the student employees of the library.
The two $500 scholarships will be awarded on April 22.
“[Students are] helping us in a high level way,” said Carol Reid, coordinator of Student Employment. “It’s hard to imagine taking them away and functioning.”
The universities library employs 150 students and is one of the largest student employers on campus, Reid said. The scholarship is aimed at retaining student employees.
“We are not looking at academic or financial need,” Library Operations Manager Judy Roberts said. “We are looking at outstanding student employees.”
Friends of the University Libraries is fully backing the scholarships. The 80 staff members at the library have also made contributions. Backing has been secured to award this scholarship again in December.
Following the scholarship announcement, Archives Director Sharon Carlson will be addressing questions about the proposed move of the archives and Regional Historical Collection.
“The university is still looking at a couple of options,” Carlson said. “[The former K-Mart building on Stadium Drive] is still on the board, so is a new building.”
During a recent East Campus Task Force meeting, the group conveyed it was performing due diligence to several, still un-named, places that could house the archives.
This meeting is open to the public. Refreshments will be served. The archive is part of WMU’s library system and is one of the largest collections in Southwest Michigan.
