Meet the WSA Pres. candidates: Andrew Ladd

By Megan Higdon
Western Herald

Andrew Ladd has been a part of the Western Student Association for three years, serving as a senator of the swim club his freshman year, and as speaker of the senate for the past two years. He is also part of numerous WSA committees and has authored and co-authored many resolutions.

Ladd is currently working towards his bachelor’s degree in aviation science and administration and is a member of the Aviation Student Council, which he is a founding member of.

Ladd has been an involved student throughout his years at Western Michigan University, and, if elected, his plans do not only encompass WSA but WMU and the city of Kalamazoo.

“A big thing for me is connecting students to downtown,” he said.

For students to become more active in the Kalamazoo community, Ladd said, they need to have a better way of getting there, instead of just relying on Metro Transit, which stops running at 10 p.m. Ladd is trying to pursue the creation of a bike path that will run from campus to downtown.

“If students can’t get there then they won’t go there,” he said.

Ladd has numerous plans for a variety of important topics on the table but a main goal that he hopes for within WSA is creating academic student councils for each college.

“I think it’s something every college should have,” he said.

He said it is his number one priority after the reorganization of the Allocations Committee, and its bylaws and guidelines.

Accompanying Ladd is his vice president candidate, Chris Rettich. A freshman, Rettich is a senator for the Campus Activities Board. He is also a part of the Student and Activities Leadership Programs, Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and College Republicans.

Ladd emphasizes the importance of the experience he has within the WSA, with WMU and with Kalamazoo.

“I can really do the best job for the WSA,” he said.

Currently the Ladd/Rettich candidacy has received endorsements from 12 different registered student organizations, including the College of Aviation, College Democrats, and College Republicans.

  1. After reading both pieces I find the lack of an unbiased view of both candidates sad and embarrassing coming from a newspaper I used to hold in high regards. That being said my biggest disappointment comes in the last section of both pieces where endorsements are discussed.

While it is true I am the President of Public Relations Organization as well as their campaign manager, both pieces commented upon in Aaron Booth’s bio, the same emphasis was not put into Ladd’s bio. As every one is very well aware, Ladd is an aviation student and sits upon the e-board for a number of the aviation RSOs who are endorsing him. This was not mentioned. Rettich also is a member of a number of organizations who gave endorsement. This was also not mentioned. It was also brought to my attention Ladd’s campaign manger is the president of another student org who has given them endorsement the Croquet Club @ WMU. This was not mentioned.

I am not sure if it is poor reporting that is to blame or a blatant case of not wanting to run an unbiased story. Either way I am disappointed in the job the Herald has done and would ask this be remedied.

  2. After reading both pieces, I find the Herald’s reporting to be spot on as always, especially when it comes to endorsements. If you do a little fact checking, you’ll find that Andrew Ladd recieved only one endorsement from an RSO (especially an aviation RSO) of which he currently sits on the executive board: The Aviation Student Council. Chris Rettich recieved only one endorsement from an RSO of which he currently sits on the executive board: Pi Kappa Phi.

The 12 seperate endorsements that the Ladd-Rettich team gained show their willingness to reach out to RSO’s around campus. They recieved an endorsement from Croquet at WMU, an RSO which their campaign manager is the founder and President of, but which neither serve on the executive board of.

The Ladd-Rettich team campaigned tirelessly around campus in a fair and ethical manner throughout their campaign. The number and variety of endorsements shows their true commitment to reach out to every RSO and academic college, no matter how big or how small. Though the campaign recieved only 12 endorsements, they visited over 40 different RSO’s and student sponsored events around campus in an effort to talk to students and hear what Broncos expect from their student government.

  3. As the president of Alpha Eta Rho the Aviation Fraternity, i can say that Andrew is not part of my organization in any way but made his case to out E-Board for an endorsement. I am also 99% that the only aviation RSO he is a part of is Aviation Student Council.

    just my $.02

  4. @Josh Weaver: Ok, your first mistake is that you hold the Herald in high regards, but that is another issue.
Since you want to bring up silly things, there was probably a word limit for the article given that Booth’s article was 363 words and Ladd’s was 348. So both were about 350.
However it is not like you are unbiased in this given that you only commented on Ladd’s article and not Booth’s with this same comment.
Something I’ve noticed though is that Booth supporters tend to be over spirited no-questioners who want another president that wants to just build their resume then actually help students.
